Title: Cornered Beast
Post by: REDACTED on August 23, 2013, 02:44:14 pm
I don't know if it's just me, but I'm not super into this move as I rarely find a good time to use it, and when I do it often gives them a free headshot on me.

It's clearly intended for a more defensive purpose, as you can only use it to grab the edge of the screen. Unfortunately I'm usually the one on the offense more so than defense, so times I'm near the edge are rare.

Are there any tricks to using this in a more offensive way or is it just a defensive move for brief corner bouts?

Supposedly you can use Cornered Beast to kick away from your opponent.  Dunno what situations that'd help in though.  Enlighten me if there are some good uses for it.

It doesn't propel redacted forward enough to capitalize on the characters that corner her, and those it would work great on, redacted should already have a good matchup.

I've been thinking about this for a long time now, and honestly I haven't been able to think of a single practical application for the move. Well, except one: the Jefailey match-up.

If you prefer my strategy of "sit full screen and build meter if he's trying to charge a kick", smart Jefaileys will obviously try using Disqualification to sap your meter. Theoretically, a well timed dive into Cornered Beast might be able to let you dodge it and continue building meter. Yes, it's not free, but it's better than losing all of your meter and it's pretty much impossible for Redacted's fat self to dodge it otherwise.

I also feel like the general purpose of this move is to have a surprise means of escaping the corner, but... Redacted isn't often endangered by the corner. She benefits from it in a way, if you play your cards right.

I sometimes find myself trying to use cornered beast just SLIGHTLY too far from the wall, and it doesn't go off.

If they increased the range at which you can jump towards the wall, even slightly, it'd be good for escaping or baiting.

I have this problem too. They'll open up and I'll try to grab it, but it's just a smidge too far. I wish her kickback pushed you back a little bit more, but I live with it the best I can.

Cornered Beast's reverse jump is godlike.

Opponent tries to headshot you while you're standing. Opponent flies over you. Without waiting for them to pass over you, hit Dive out of Cornered Beast to jump backwards and punish opponent. Especially against opponents like Shoals, Stream, Sensei who tend to float over and past you and whose hitboxes are safely towards there feet. If you can time the reverse jump just as their hitbox passes over your head, you can headshot them as they pass you.

And since it hasn't been posted yet (unless it's in the other Red thread), the reverse jump from Cornered Beast is done by holding D + K to activate Cornered Beast, releasing Dive and pressing it again. Note that Cornered Beast will still continue to hold even when you let go of Dive. Any special in the game can be held by hitting D + K and then releasing any single button while holding the other.

What do you mean by reverse jump? You jump towards the wall, or just out over them? I tried releasing Dive and pressing it again but the usual jump off happens.

I'm able to do the reverse jump with Feral Stance, and man is that a great alternative to her kickback.

Sorry! Got my specials mixed-up. I was thinking of Feral Stance that entire post.

Cornered Beast is great if someone has you in the corner and is just sitting right outside of your normal kick range waiting for you to do something. A dive into CB and then Kick goes much farther than just D, K by itself.

Also, Cornered Beast can be used multiple times in a row to actually climb up the wall. As soon as Red lets go of the wall and begins her jump off, she is still technically close enough to the wall to grab it again. If you time it right, she'll actually gain height on this second jump and cling to the wall again. So if your opponent is reading your CB kicks and punishing, try doing two-in-a-row to throw off their timing and punish them instead.

This explains why Redacted was kicking the wrong way sometimes. I kew she could kick away, but i never found out how.

You should probably use "Feral Kicks" to retreat instead of empty kickbacks since it's generally faster and lets you build meter at the same time.

I did this on accident during an online game last night, and now that I'm thinking about it there might be an interesting use for Cornered Beast: using it lower to the ground to create sudden forward momentum.

Instead of using it to actively get out of the corner, you could potentially use it to quickly reposition yourself against somebody who's trying to push you there. Like a surprise attack of sorts. Kickback, use Cornered Beast to suddenly position yourself within striking distance, and force them to panic and possibly make a mistake. This seems like something of an "every once in a while" tactic as opposed to a go-to, but... it could be useful.

It's also Redacted's only way to spend meter, and... well, to be perfectly honest Kickfactor Redacted is looking less and less appealing as time goes on. Or at least not nearly as effective as others by comparison.

It's really only good for getting out of corner traps.

Honestly, it really really sucks. It's far to difficult to get in the corner and even harder to lure them into that space when you have it when they can just wait at the mid for the line to appear.

I'd like to see it have a little more utility by being able to also air meter into the air meter into the corner so you can then air meter into the cornered beast. It would give her a little more utility.

Corner yourself
Do Cornered Beast
Now they are cornered

This might(?) work

That's the idea behind it of course, however in action it really doesn't help much. Maybe if it made you jump farther away from the wall it might be better.

Maybe if it moved yourself to the corner...

TBH I'm 0/5 or so in dodging corner beast as dive, yet I'm 0/3 in trying to use it. *shrugs*
